4-7 October 2001
Foundation of International Studies, University of Malta
Valletta, Malta

The Arab World Geographer/Le Géographe du Monde Arabe (AWG) in Toronto, Canada in cooperation with the European Mediterranean Network for the Social Sciences (EUMENESS) in Malta, are pleased to announce a jointly sponsored conference. This academic venture is a further step towards consolidating social science research and building academic bridges among geographers in the Arab world, in the Mediterranean countries and beyond.

The conference will bring together geographers and other interested persons and will focus on the spatiality of the mutual impact of Europe and the Arab lands. It will focus principally (although not exclusively) entered on the following topics: Euro-Arab labour migration,  the Arab diaspora in Europe, colonial and present-day environmental policies, the effects of globalization on Euro-Arab relations, the representation of the Arabs in "travellers'" literature, trade and tourism between Europe and the Arab World, the Mediterranean as a site of cultural encounter, the Arabs and the Iberian peninsula, and European influence on city planning in the Arab world. Papers in these areas are especially welcome.

The venue of the conference will be the Foundation of International Studies at the University of Malta. Prospective contributors are asked to send a detailed abstract (200-250 words) of their papers in English, French, or  Arabic to the conference organizer by 30 April 2001. Decisions on acceptance will be given, following external refereeing, in late June.

In addition to specialized panels and workshops there will be a number of guest lectures by keynote speakers who have been invited to the conference. These lectures will be organized as a round table.

Further information and updates will be posted on a regular basis on the AWG website at:  http://www.frw.uva.nl/ggct/awg
